Frequently Asked Questions How do I sign up to volunteer with The Redwoods? The first step is to fill out our online volunteer application. Within that application, you will have an opportunity to choose the next orientation date. Once you have completed your application and selected a date, your next step is to attend the orientation to find out more about specific volunteer opportunities and how to sign up for them. If you have further questions please contact The Redwoods program office at (415) 383-2741 or by email at jsanchez@theredwoods.org.
What types of volunteer activities are available? More detailed information is available at our volunteer orientation, but in general regular volunteer opportunities include going for walks on our 10 acre campus with residents in wheelchairs or with those who are too frail to walk longer distances, spending time reading and talking with residents in our Personalized Care area of Assisted Living or with residents in our Health Care Center. Some opportunities exist regularly during the week to help out in our organic vegetable and flower garden and orchard. Volunteers also regularly assist with activities scheduled in these areas, such as Bingo, garden parties, board games and the like. Periodically, volunteers in our database will receive notifications of special opportunities to support major upcoming events and parties on the larger campus.
Can students fulfill community service hours at The Redwoods? The Redwoods enjoys the support of hundreds of students throughout the year, and we welcome the participation of younger volunteers on our campus as a vibrant part of our intergenerational programming. Because so many students come to us to fulfill their community service requirements for school, we do ask that you schedule your volunteerism with us well in advance of the posted deadline for you to complete your hours. When we have too many students coming at one time, we are unfortunately often unable to schedule everyone who would like to volunteer with us in time to meet deadlines for submitting verification of community service hours.
Is there a minimum age for someone to volunteer at The Redwoods? Volunteers of all ages are welcome but volunteers ages 12 and under are required to have at least one parent accompanying them when volunteering at The Redwoods. Over the years, we have had many families volunteer together, and it often results in some of the most meaningful experiences and relationships between the residents and volunteers on our campus.
How can I get involved with The Redwoods Annual Crab Fest? If you are interested in being involved on a leadership level with the fundraising and volunteer activities of The Redwoods Annual Crab Fest, including the planning and coordination of the Crab Fest Silent Auction and Raffle, please contact The Redwoods Program Director, Jim Sanchez.
