FY 2007 DONOR LIST

From rent subsidies to transportation. From reading machines to seeds for the garden. The Redwoods has many needs that are supported by philanthropic contributions – and offer several ways for people to give. Donors determine which approach best fits their individual situation. Because there are different ways to give, we thought we’d provide the following brief overview of some of the options available:

The Annual Campaign - This fundraising drive begins in the fall and is a year-round effort to raise unrestricted support for The Redwoods from the broad community. At the direction of the board of directors, annual funds may be used for ongoing needs, such as programs, activities and rent subsidies, or special priorities as they arise. Donations to the annual fund are primarily sought through appeal letters and personal solicitations. Gifts may be in the form of cash, securities or in-kind contributions of items such as food, books and other items.

Friends of the Redwoods - Friends of the Redwoods (“Friends”) is a membership organization whose mission is to “enhance the quality of life for residents of the Redwoods.” Through annual membership dues and special events, such as the Crab Fest, Friends has raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years – funds that have purchased items such as auditorium chairs, a movie projector/sound system, DVD/VCR equipment, reading machines and are now providing weekly transportation for residents. Friends also hosts an annual membership Dessert Extravaganza.

The Shop at the Redwoods - If you have treasures (silver, china, crystal, jewelry, paintings, lamps and furniture) you no longer need or want, consider putting them on consignment at The Shop. Since opening in 1999, The Shop has become a premier source of antiques and collectables for Mill Valley and Southern Marin, generating income for consignors and net proceeds to support resident programs and activities. The Shop is open Tuesday,Thursday and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. (415) 383-1600 x 256.

Bequest Gifts - Crucial support has come from those who have included The Redwoods in their estate plan. Usually this has been through charitable bequests, but many have set up charitable gift annuities, which provide tax and income benefits to the donor and then pass a gift to The Redwoods. Those who inform us of their bequest or gift annuity are honored by members in the Legacy Circle (non-residents) or Buy Out Club (residents).

Endowment Gifts - Finally, The Redwoods Foundation has created two endowment funds to provide for the retirement center’s future stability and security. Gifts to either endowment are held in perpetuity, the principal is invested and income is earned on the principal. Earnings on the Endowment for Residents are restricted to providing rental assistance for residents, whereas earnings on the General Endowment are unrestricted and may be used for special capital projects, general operations, or resident needs. Endowment funds are important because they provide a relatively predictable income stream. Donors wishing to make an endowment gift should designate to which fund their contribution should be placed.

We thank all of those who have chosen to support The Redwoods in the past. Your generosity is deeply appreciated. If you have any questions about including The Redwoods in your estate plan or making a donation to the Annual Campaign, please contact the development office at (415) 383-1600 extenstion 267 or 269.
